The Pennsylvania Department of Health released its first weekly update of COVID-19 on Wednesday, saying at a media briefing that 40 other states are joining in the transition from daily to weekly reports. During the week, another 12,364 infections were reported, averaging 1,766 cases per day. This is a slight increase over the previous week, but more than 2.5 times higher than the figure reported a month ago.
Northampton County ranks 7th out of 67 counties with the highest infection rates per capita, adding 475 cases this week, or 155.6 cases per 100,000 population. Lehigh County ranks 17th, accumulating 449 cases per week, or 121.6 per 100,000 residents. Northampton has been close to the top for the past 30 days.
The major counties for the week focused on the New York border: Bradford (361.4), Sullivan (247.3), Susquehanna (213.3), Wyoming (190.3) and Mantur (159.1).
To date, 2.83 million infections have been reported across Pennsylvania.

Hospitalizations
According to the Department of Health, there were an average of 669 hospitalized patients with COVID last week, up from 521 a week earlier. During the week the number of hospitalizations increased by 28%, and over the last month – by 47%.
Hospitals in Lehigh and Northampton counties received an average of 55 patients with COVID-19 last week, up 26% from the previous week and 43% over the past month. There are six people on the beds of the local intensive care unit, four on the ventilator.
Vaccinations
The latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show:
Pennsylvania has 8.77 million fully vaccinated people, or 68.5% of the population. Another 2.1 million people need further vaccination. A total of 10.057 million people, or 84.9% of the state’s population, were hit by 23.05 million shots.
According to the CDC, Pennsylvania residents receive an average of 15,145 vaccinations each day. Of these, 3167 are the first doses. The number of general vaccinations per day over the past 30 days has increased by 75%. The number of first doses taken per day has increased by 18.9% over the past 30 days.
