Grammy-nominated singer Eric Burton lost the lyrics during “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Friday night’s World Series opener between Houston and Philadelphia.

As players and staff lined the field for the traditional pregame ceremony and a giant American flag unfurled on the outfield, the Black Pumas frontman walked off the track on the second line. He sang, “How proudly we hailed in the twilight’s last tide” instead of “brilliant.”

He rightly continued, “Whose broad stripes and bright stars in perilous strife.” But then, instead of “Over the shafts we watched, so gallantly streamed?” he returned to “What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last” before singing “streaming” again instead of “gliaming”.

Then Burton got it right: “And the rocket flashes red, the bomb explodes in midair” and finished without a hitch.

Burton performed at last year’s televised inauguration of President Joe Biden.
