On February 22, 1980, the United States defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 in a hockey match at the Lake Placid Olympics. It was one of the biggest upheavals in the history of the sport.
The Americans lost to the USSR 10-3 in their last show game before the Olympics.
Led by coach Herb Brooks and team captain Mike Eruzione, the U.S. won the gold medal. Erusione scored the winning goal in the middle of the third period.
Goalkeeper Jim Craig took the lead in one ball, making many big saves in a game where Soviet troops outscored the Americans 39-16.
The game became known as “The Miracle on Ice” after announcer Al Michaels said in the final seconds, “Do you believe in miracles?”
