Zenkaikon gives people in Lancaster the opportunity to see some of their favorite characters from anime, TV shows, movies and video games – how often can you say hello to Luigi on a Saturday afternoon?

People who dress up play cosplay (short for costume game).

Anyone can do cosplay, regardless of body type. For the cosplay primer, check out our pre-lighting.

We spoke to eight cosplayers on Saturday afternoon at Zenkaikon.

Here’s what they say inspires their costumes and why they came to Zenkaikon this year.

Melissa Shaw, 29, Hatborough, Pennsylvania.

Melissa Shaw of Hatboro – Kaylet with a key role in Zenkaykon on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Who are you wearing?

“Kaylet from“ Critical Role, ”which is a D&D show voiced by actors. It’s a lot to get in, but it’s worth it. “

Tell us about how the costume was going.

“It used to be Jack Frost’s staff from ‘Rise of the Guardians,’ but I said, ‘Oh, I can make it beautiful for her.’ I bought a dress, made a cape out of leaves. It was supposed to have more leaves, but Amazon made me nervous. I burned myself a few times, sticking it all (roses on her headband) here. I did half. “

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“It’s kind of my home accident, so I’ve been going to it for years. I’ve been staffed for it. It just feels comfortable, cozy and homey, as opposed to the big downsides where some people are more intimidating. It’s wearable. whatever, and it’s just nice. “

Matthew Gonzalez, 24, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania.

Zenkaykon

Matthew Gonzelez of Boalsburg dressed as the Chainsaw Man during the Zenkaicon on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Who are you wearing?

“I’m dressed like the Man with the Chainsaw. His real name is Dandy. He just has a chainsaw for his head and hands. He kills devils and stuff.”

Tell us about how the costume was going.

“I read for this manga and thought, ‘Okay, I want to dress in it.’ And I knew it would be very difficult. I had a template for it and I was starting to create it. When I came to this process (points to the head of the chainsaw), it was tedious, it was long. It was something I no longer wanted to do. But I said, “No, believe me the process, when it’s over, will be cool.” It was a week before the convention and I thought, ugh, I should finish this. I needed to do a lot. It was fun now that it’s done. “

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“Actually, I’m here for the first time. One of my roommates recommended us to go to this convention because it’s like a two hour drive, so not the worst distance and we love constantly going to conventions … I like the place, I like the place holding, I like. as a situation ”.

Adam Arena, 26, New Rachel, New York.

Zenkaykon

Adam Arena of New Rachel, New York, dressed as Spider-Man at Zenkaikon on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

You are obviously dressed like Spider-Man; tell me about the inspiration to change into it.

“I always considered him close as a character.” After Arena answered that question, someone asked him to pose with two other Spider-Man cosplayers in the vicinity. ”

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“In fact, I am coming here for the first time. I was invited by a friend of mine, and I said, “Why not?” I usually don’t miss the opportunity to practice cosplay. “

Zach Thompson, 28, of Ashburn, Virginia.

Zenkaykon

Zach Thompson of Ashburn, Virginia, is Rina Tenoji of “Love Live! Nidigasaki High School Idols Club, ”during the Zenkaykon Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Who are you wearing?

“Rina from Love Live!”

Tell us about how the costume was going.

“A lot of pain. It’s a 3D-printed frame on the side, and I had to warm up the panel with a laser. Actually on the other layer there’s double-sided glass, so you can’t see my face through it.”

But can you see through that?

“Several,” Thompson says with a laugh. In brighter places I can, but later it gets hard. Finally, there’s the Arduino board, and I have a control board here that I can use to change (the facets). I did it all. I designed every part of it. ».

How to start such a process?

“Um, COVID?” Thompson laughs. “But, more seriously, every time I watched the show, I thought it was such a stupid thing, I think it’s some kind of challenge for someone. It’s actually the second version I’ve made. The first one I soldered individually as 100 LEDs together ”.

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“I came here two years ago. I already had a ticket to COVID, so my ticket was just carried over to next and next year and I still wanted to go. My friend lives in Lancaster, so he gave me a nice room and a couch, on which you can ride.

Chrissy Rose, 24, Norwistown, Pennsylvania.

Zenkaykon

Chrissy Rose of Norristown is dressed as Sanidrop from the movie Five Nights at Freddy’s during Zencoikon on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Who are you wearing?

“I’m dressed as San, the kindergarten attendant from the movie ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.'”

Tell us about how the costume was going.

I’m not the greatest at sewing things, but I still like to add a personal touch (costume). I go in and buy things I can customize. I found a pair of beautiful colored trousers painted on the stripes itself. His little skirt – a full-length skirt that I cut and changed to make it look similar to the one he wears. The bracelets-bells and solar details I completely customized. I love making props. “

I like that the solar part is spinning.

“Yeah, just put it on the turntable and let go.”

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“So the last time I was in this scam was before it even moved to this place. It was my first scam, at the Oaks Convention Center (Editor’s note: Zenkaikon was held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Ox in 2012. The Convention moved to Lancaster in 2013). I was just so busy and I went to other cons with friends who introduced me to this. It just made more sense to come back here. It’s a great experience. “

Abi Renick, 16, Mannheim, Pennsylvania.

Zenkaykon

Abi Renica of Mannheim is dressed in the original costume during Zencaikon on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Who are you wearing?

“I’m dressed like my own original character. I got it commissioned by one of my closest friends and they made it to order, just for me.”

Tell us how it turned out.

“I funded it. I just paid my friend to do it all for me. We walked together on the fur. They made a base and added more and more. I said, yes, that’s good. “

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“I just like it. It was my first convention in history, and I was a little sad that it was canceled last year. But now that he’s back, I’m back.”

Have you been well so far?

“Yes, I like it. I’ve been here all three days. And not only do I make fluffy costumes, I also do cosplay. ”

Eric Bainard, 27, Exton, Pennsylvania.

Zenkaykon

Eric Weinarb of Exton dressed as Gia Tomioka of Demon Slayer, on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Who are you wearing?

“Gia Tamioka from” Demon Slayer “.

How did the costume come together?

“It was a last minute thing. I got it from Amazon in a day or two. ”

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

“This is my first time here. My friend recommended it to me, so I thought, why not. I like anime, so why not?”

Robin Bates, 39, Biglerville, Pennsylvania.

Zenkaykon

Robin Bates of Biglerville is Luigi for Zencaikon on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Of course, you’re dressed like Luigi. Tell us a little bit about how the costume was going.

Luigi is a very simple suit. Basically, you just buy a jumpsuit, get Wolverine boots, a green shirt, a few dress gloves and a hat. I mostly like making props. This (hammer) is a rod with dowels. A pipe for pouring concrete and foam and then just painted in black metal ”.

Why are you in Zenkaikon?

A friend comes, he’s dressed like Mario. He came for his daughter, he doesn’t care too much about the Mario brothers. He dresses like Darth Vader, Chewbacca, some other characters from “Star Wars.” There’s a friend who’s local here, he dresses like ours Darth Maul. Today he will dress like Darth Maul, so if you see him … “

I’ll tell him you said hello.
