A figure of Nelly Bly dedicated to Pittsburgh Airport Local news

To celebrate her 158th birthday on May 5, the realistic figure of Armstrong County native Nelly Bly was consecrated at the departure terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport.

During her life, a native of Apollo and once a student at the Indiana School of Education (now Indiana State University in Pennsylvania), she traveled the world for 72 days.

But because of the pandemic, Allegheny County Airport officials said, it took more than two years for it to travel about 18 miles from Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh to the airport west of the city.

Nelly Bly joins the figures of George Washington and Frank Harris of the Pittsburgh Steelers at the terminal airstrip.
