(Central Square) – Pennsylvania Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz answered questions about Latinos at a town hall Friday, a day after his opponent did the same.
At a forum hosted by Javier Palomarez, president of the US Hispanic Business Council, Oz pitched himself as a bipartisan candidate who would stand up for Pennsylvania’s energy industry while cutting red tape for business owners across the commonwealth.
Oz faces Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who spoke to the group Thursday. Election day – November 8.
“You have to be able to work with people across the aisle from you,” Oz said. “There is much more that unites us than divides us.
“We have so many opportunities in Pennsylvania that are right here under our feet. If you want to protect the environment, grow the economy and protect workers, then you want to harvest energy … for example, we have enough natural gas to power the entire country for hundreds of years.”
The clause echoes a similar argument he made during Tuesday’s Senate debate as Center Square reported earlier. Fetterman-like Oz was light on policy details on how he plans to boost Pennsylvania’s economy, but he cited the potential of natural gas production to spur economic growth across the commonwealth.
“If we can get energy out of the ground, it will create jobs and cash flow on multiple levels,” he said.
In places like Allentown, Oz said, “they have a future, they see it, but they just feel held back. And I want to release not just the energy, but the people of Pennsylvania to know again that you don’t have to leave to move up.”
He continued his topic of conversation about the opportunities that remain in the state to improve people’s lives.
“I’m actually optimistic about Pennsylvania because we have so much untapped opportunity just by dealing with the overregulation and some of the taxes that are pretty heavy in the state,” Oz said. “I think we’re going to be able to ease the burden on the job creators, and in doing so, create more opportunities for young people to stay here.”
Closely related to his economic vision was his attitude to immigration. In the past, Oz said, America had “a very clear vision of what it wanted from its immigrants. They wanted people who were industrious and industrious; sometimes they were educated, sometimes not. We need to return to a thoughtful approach to ensuring that the jobs that need to be filled are filled.”
In his closing remarks, Oz reiterated his point from Tuesday.
“It’s very important to ask one key question,” he said, “are you happy with where the country is going?” If people don’t, then they know I’m a person for change.”
