U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist has won the Democratic nomination for Florida governor, putting him in a position to challenge Gov. Ron DeSantis this fall in a campaign the Republican sees as a first step toward a potential run for the White House. In electing Crist, Florida Democrats sided with a candidate supported by many in the party establishment who saw him as the safest choice. Crist, 66, defeated Nikki Fried, the state’s agriculture commissioner, who ran for a more progressive campaign. New York Democrats chose Jerry Nadler over Carolyn Maloney in a congressional primary that pitted two powerful House committee chairs against each other for the same seat.
U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler defeated U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney in the Democratic primary after a court forced the two veteran lawmakers to move into the same New York congressional district. As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Nadler twice led the fight for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump. His victory caps a 30-year congressional battle for Maloney, who fought for government aid to people affected by the clouds of toxic soot after the 9/11 attacks. The unusual battle between the incumbents resulted from a redistricting process that combined Nadler’s base on the West Side of Manhattan with Maloney’s base on the East Side.
Two New York Democrats have been ousted from the US House of Representatives in a primary after congressional redistricting in one of the nation’s most liberal states. Carolyn Maloney, who served as president and chaired a powerful House committee, and progressive first-term candidate Mondair Jones, one of the first black members of Congress to be openly gay, lost the election. Moloney lost to her longtime colleague, Congressman Jerry Nadler. Jones lost in a crowded race for the new district. House Democratic campaign chairman Sean Patrick Maloney has survived a primary challenge from a progressive.
U.S. Representative Markwayne Mullin won the Republican primary runoff for one of Oklahoma’s U.S. Senate seats. Mullin’s victory Tuesday over former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon makes Mullin the likely front-runner for the job. US Senator Jim Inhofe is retiring early after nearly 30 years in office. Inhofe will have four years left in his term when he steps down early next year. Mullin, a Cherokee Nation citizen, and Shannon have both been staunch Trump supporters, but Mullin earned the former president’s coveted endorsement after winning among 13 GOP candidates in the June primary. In the Democratic primary for Oklahoma’s second U.S. Senate seat, cybersecurity expert Madison Horne defeated Oklahoma City attorney Jason Bollinger.
More than 40 million Americans could see their student loan debt reduced — and in many cases eliminated — under President Joe Biden’s long-awaited forgiveness plan. Biden’s announcement on Wednesday was a historic but politically divisive move ahead of the midterm elections. In keeping with a campaign promise, Biden is set to erase $10,000 in federal student loans for those with incomes below $125,000 a year or families making less than $250,000. It waives an additional $10,000 for those who received federal Pell grants for college. It is seen as an unprecedented effort to stem the tide of America’s rapidly rising student debt. But it also faces almost certain legal challenges.
The president of Ukraine said that Russian forces launched a missile attack on a railway station in central Ukraine on the country’s Independence Day, killing 22 people. Wednesday’s fatal blow followed President Vladimir Zelensky’s warnings in recent days that the Russians might “try to do something particularly nasty, something particularly brutal” this week. Wednesday is a national holiday in Ukraine commemorating the country’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It also marks the six-month point in the war against Russia.
As Russia’s war against Ukraine drags on, U.S. security assistance is shifting to a longer-term campaign that is likely to keep more U.S. military troops in Europe in the future, U.S. officials say. They say the new aid package to be announced includes an additional $3 billion to train and equip Ukrainian forces to fight in the coming years. The aid is expected to be announced on Wednesday, the day the war reaches six months and Ukraine celebrates Independence Day. The money will be used to fund contracts for drones, weapons and other equipment that may not enter the battlefield for a year or two.
Pfizer’s says its COVID-19 vaccine was 73% effective in protecting children under the age of 5 due to the omicron outbreak in the spring. Vaccinations for infants, toddlers and preschoolers opened in the US in June after months of delays. By mid-August, only about 6% of children between the ages of 6 months and 4 years had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Health authorities approved Pfizer and BioNTech’s low-dose vaccine based on research that showed it was safe and produced high levels of antibodies against the virus. The new update analyzed the March-June COVID-19 diagnoses in Pfizer’s ongoing three-dose vaccine trial.
A special prosecutor has said he will not file charges against two white Atlanta police officers who confronted Rayshard Brooks during a June 2020 standoff that ended in the fatal shooting of the 27-year-old black man. Pete Scandalakis said he believes Officer Garrett Rolfe, who shot Brooks, acted appropriately. He also said the second officer involved in the collision, Officer Devin Brosnan, will not face charges. The shooting comes amid heightened tensions and protests across the country following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis less than three weeks ago. The sometimes violent protests over Floyd’s death in Atlanta have largely died down, but Brooks’ killing has sparked a new round of demonstrations against police brutality.
An Arizona woman has died after being swept away by flash flooding four days ago in Zion National Park in Utah. Zion National Park spokesman Jonathan Shafer said in a news release Tuesday afternoon that the body of 29-year-old Jetal Agnihatra was found Monday. This ended the four-day search and rescue mission, which continued beyond the southern border of the park. Her death was the latest reminder of the dangers of hiking through the park’s narrow red rock canyons in southern Utah during monsoon season. They can be as narrow as windows and hundreds of feet deep and can quickly become dangerous during a flood.
Actress Anne Hech will be buried in the famous cemetery of Los Angeles, along with many Hollywood stars. Heche’s family said Tuesday that she had been cremated and her ashes would be placed in a mausoleum at Hollywood Forever Cemetery at a later date. The cemetery is home to stars such as Judy Garland, Douglas Fairbanks and Burt Reynolds. It’s also a cultural center that hosts movies and concerts, which Heche’s sons say she would have loved. She died earlier this month at the age of 53 from injuries sustained when her car crashed into a home in Los Angeles. Hatch was an Emmy Award-winning actor who worked consistently in film and television for more than three decades.

Sabrina Ionescu scored five straight points to lift New York 68-65, lifting the sold-out Barclays Center Lower Cup. But Chicago went on a 16-0 run, helped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Quigley.
