Beer events are pouring into historic Bethlehem – The Morning Bell

Lehigh Valley beer was born in Bethlehem. That is a fact.

In the mid-1700s, early Moravian settlers built breweries in their Christmas town community near Monaco Creek and around a corridor now known as Main Street.

Two new tasty programs are organized in the historical museums and places of Bethlehem to celebrate these impressions. And soon the curious, who crave more, will be able to learn about how brewing originated in our region.

Here’s what we know about events:

Enjoy a walking tour of Main Street that explores the history of Bethlehem’s alcohol, including a visit to the 1810 Goundie House (where the city’s first brewer, Johann Sebastian Gundi lived and brewed beer), the House of the Single Brothers (the site of the first brewery in Bethlehem), the Lost Tavern, the Red Stag Pub and the Sun Inn. The tour will start at Goundie House with a free drink and last approximately 90 minutes.

Historic Bethlehem explains, “Somewhere 5 hours! In colonial times, it was believed that alcohol helps the sick, revives the elderly and strengthens the weak. For many colonists, a morning mug of solid cider or a lunch spill of ale soothed the stomach and helped people throughout the day.

When: Saturday from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Details: The tour begins at Goundie House with a free drink and continues around the city

How much: $ 20 for non-members and $ 15 for members

Led by Dr. Lloyd Ackert of Drexel University, this program will allow you to customize your own “beer” with ingredients including malt, hops and spices.

You can then test your nose using your olfactory abilities to find out what other people are adding to their “brews”.

The winning recipe (based on the smell test) will be specially brewed by Dr. Ackert – an experienced home brewer.

In addition to being an experienced home brewer, Dr. Ackert is a lecturer in the Department of History at Drexel University and a researcher at Drexel University’s Academy of Natural Sciences.

When: June 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.
