Biden on leaked abortion opinion draft: “Choice is fundamental”

“I believe that a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Rowe (against Wade) has been the law of the country for almost fifty years, and the fundamental justice and stability of our law requires that it not be repealed, ”Biden said in statement.
Biden did not name specific steps his administration would take if the ruling was overturned, but said it would “fall on our country’s elected officials” to protect pregnant women’s access to abortion, and that voters should elect candidates who support the rights to abortion.
He said he had instructed his Council on Gender Policy and the White House Concert to “prepare options for the administration’s response to continued attacks on abortion and reproductive rights with various possible outcomes in cases pending before the Supreme Court.”
The draft The opinion, led by Judge Samuel Alita, was leaked and reported to Politico, and Biden warned that “we do not know whether this draft is valid or whether it reflects the final decision of the court.”
The Public Information Office at the court issued a statement late Monday morning stating that although the document is valid, it does not constitute a final court decision, an ABC News correspondent reported. wrote in a tweet. Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement that court officials respect the confidentiality of the trial, and the release of the draft was “the only and most egregious breach of that trust” and will be investigated.
Biden called on voters to take action. “At the federal level, we will need more senators to elect and a majority in the House of Representatives to pass legislation that codifies caviar, which I will work to pass and sign the law, ”Biden said.
The Biden administration in December defended his case in the Supreme Court on a 15-week ban on abortion in Mississippi. The case is known as Women’s Health Dobbs vs. Jackson.
If the ruling overturns Rowe v. Wade, then access to abortion will be based on a patchwork of state laws. The red states have imposed some of the most restrictive restrictions on abortion, and the blue states have passed laws that provide access to abortion.
Democrats in Congress have called for codifying Rowe v. Wade into law. In a joint statement last night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that “the Supreme Court is ready to impose the greatest restriction of rights in fifty years.”
“Republican-appointed judges are reported to have voted for the abolition Rowe vs. Wade it would be disgusting, one of the worst and most harmful decisions in modern history, ”they said.
In a statement, U.S. spokesman Dwight Evans, D-3rd District, echoed those sentiments.
“The draft Supreme Court report should alert every American who, like me, believes in choice and opposes forced pregnancy, which will have a disproportionate impact on black and brown women. I voted for the Women’s Health Act when it was passed by the House of Representatives last September. That was more than seven months ago – it’s time for the Senate to hear the voices of tens of millions of American women and allies who support reproductive freedom – and to act. ” Said Evans.
