Check out Jif Peanut Butter; The FDA is issuing a recall due to an outbreak of Salmonella – Morning Bell

If you have Jif peanut butter in your pantry, you’ll want to check the label because there are serious recalls due to concerns about salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies, is investigating an outbreak of salmonella in several states related to some Jif peanut butter products manufactured at JM Smucker Company in Lexington, Kentucky.

There have been no reports of disease in Pennsylvania.

JM Smucker has voluntarily recalled some Jif peanut butter products that have batch numbers between 1274425 – 2140425, only if the first seven digits end at 425 (manufactured in Lexington, Kentucky).

You should not eat, sell or serve peanut butter of the revoked Jif brand. This product has a two-year shelf life, so consumers should check out any Jif peanut butter in their home.

The FDA recommends that if you use revoked Jif peanut butter with batch numbers from 1274425 to 2140425 and the first seven digits end at 425, you should wash and disinfect surfaces and utensils that could touch the peanut butter. If you or anyone in your family has eaten this peanut butter and you have symptoms of salmonellosis, see your doctor.

Usually symptoms appear 12-72 hours after infection. The disease, salmonellosis, usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment. Most people experience diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. More severe cases can include fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, rash, blood in urine or feces, and in some cases can be fatal. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 450 people die each year from acute salmonellosis in the United States.
