PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – As winter weather continues to move through the area, the Pennsylvania Freeway has imposed traffic restrictions that will take effect at 6 p.m.

The Tier 1 Commonwealth Restriction Plan stipulates that the following vehicles will not be allowed on the Mon-Fayette Expressway, the Greensburg Bypass, the Beaver Valley Expressway and the Southern Beltway:

  • Tractors without trailers
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly closed trailers, open trailers or tanks
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers
  • Closed cars for delivery of goods that meet the definition of CMV
  • Passenger transport, including cars, SUVs and pickups, towing trailers
  • Cars and motorhomes
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor buses without chains or spare traction devices
  • Motorcycles

As of 19:00 routes 22 and 33, I-70, I-78, I-80, I-81, I-83, I-84, I-99, I-180 and I-380 will also be under Tier Restrictions 1.

PennDOT says vehicle restrictions apply at “level 3” on the following sections of Interstate 80: from the Ohio State Border to Interstate 79 and from Interstate 180 to the New Jersey border. Restrictions mean that the transport of commercial vehicles is not allowed, except for loaded single trailers with chains or permitted alternative traction devices.

PennDOT has also introduced a speed limit of 45 miles per hour on State Highway 28, Interstate 79, East Parkway, West, North and Interstate 579 in Allegheny County. Interstate Highways 376 in Beaver County and Interstate Highways 79 and 376 in Lawrence County also have reduced speeds of 45 miles per hour.

PennDOT is also temporarily imposing restrictions on travel on Interstate 79 and 80, including a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Click here for all details.
