Wondering what legislative races we’re watching? We have too!
As always, below are the top five stories of the week.
Pennsylvania’s position as state on the battlefield of abortion is shaping up in the US Senate race as John Fetterman, the Democratic candidate, capitalizes on the controversial statements of Mehmet Oz, his Republican opponent, in the high-profile contest.
Fetterman, who said he would support codifying Roe v. Wade if elected, recently focused on Oz, who clarified his position on abortion this month and his views on reproductive health.
Oz told reporters at a press conference in Philadelphia this month that he would not support criminal liability for people who sought or doctors who performed abortions. Describing himself as “strongly pro-life”, he added that he supports exemptions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is at risk.
So this is not a “John Fetterman” column. And you know what we’re talking about here.
After more than two years in the state’s political arena, there is already well-established journalistic shorthand for Pennsylvania’s new lieutenant governor.
It’s a lather, rinse, repeat of the “black clothes, bald head, tattoos, geez, he’s tall but skinnier, Braddock, PA cheerleader fighting for the steel” formula. it launched a thousand profiles – including a recent one from NYMag.com.
An estimated 9.4 million Americans have already voted in the midterm elections by voting in person and by early mail, according to data compiled by the United States Election Project.
Florida, along with Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania, currently lead the way in early voting.
The House Law and Order Committee voted Monday to submit an interim report to the full House on the investigation into Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and crime in Philadelphia.
A final report with recommendations to the House of Representatives is expected by the end of next month’s session.
The the report condemns Krasner’s refusal to cooperate and released some of the committee’s findings, such as former assistant district attorneys calling the Krasner administration “toxic” and complaining that prosecutors have lost their voice in the courtroom.
In the weeks leading up to Election Day, more than ten percent of Pennsylvania voters are still undecided in the nation’s two most important races: John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz for US Senate and Josh Shapiro and Doug Mastriano for governor.
Whoever wins the Pennsylvania Senate race could determine which party will have a majority in Washington. Whoever is elected governor will not only influence the state — including LGBTQ politics — but also influence the 2024 presidential election.
And here is the week. See you back here next week.
