Exeter School District hired a new full-time employee to oversee safety and security planning and provide training for employees.

The school board on Monday hired Eric Seidel as the school’s safety and security coordinator. The administrative position is newly created.

Seidel is a former Berks County Sheriff’s Department captain in charge of court security and courthouse security. Most recently, he oversaw visitor safety at eight county parks and the extensive trail system in Berks as the county’s chief park ranger.

“This was a very important position for us to fill, and we were fortunate to have several outstanding candidates apply for the position,” said Dr. Christy Haller, Exeter’s superintendent, in a statement announcing the hire. “However, after an extensive interview and presentation process to a panel of administrators and board members, Eric demonstrated that he brought the right combination of law enforcement education and experience, as well as security implementation and administration and security planning experience, that we were looking for in a candidate . We look forward to working with Eric.”

Seidel, a lifelong Berks resident, will begin his job in mid-October.
