Update July 31, 2022, 10:55 a.m.:
The Great Falls Police Department says the mountain lion was safely removed and is in the custody of Game Wardens.
According to GFPD, the large cat broke a window and entered the basement of the home. Game Wardens were then able to calm him down.
Montana FWP reports that no people were injured, but a cat was injured by broken glass in a window.
FWP says, “It is FWP policy not to relocate mountain lions, and due to this policy, as well as the injuries sustained, the adult female lion was euthanized shortly after the incident. Keepers believe the lion was alone and said it had no cubs and was not currently lactating.”
Game Wardens are currently trying to locate another mountain lion that was reported seen in the 800 block of 6th St. W.
GFPD reports they have also received reports of a goat in the GFPD parking lot and bobcats along Lower River Road.
GFPD is taking this opportunity to remind people to be vigilant and watch their surroundings. Always keep your distance from wild animals.
“FWP reminds people that if they encounter a mountain lion, do not approach it, but do not run away either, which could trigger a reaction from predators. Instead, they should make noise and try to look bigger. If you encounter a lion within city limits or near your residence, contact FWP or local law enforcement.”
The following is a statement from the Great Falls Police Department:
MOUNTAIN LION PROBABLY! Officers cornered the mountain lion under the deck of a residence in the 1500 block of 3rd Ave N.
This is an extremely dangerous situation. If you are in the area, please stay home! If the lion leaves the deck space, the officers may be forced to shoot it.
We don’t yet know how the Game Wardens will handle the cat, we’ll update this post when we get more information.
