In February, John Batiste quietly married his longtime girlfriend Suleika Jawad.
Jawad, who is the author of a memoir about cancer “Between Two Kingdoms”, said the event took place just before she was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant. She was diagnosed with leukemia for the second time.
“We got married the day before I was hospitalized for a bone marrow transplant,” she told CBS Sunday Morning.
Jawad continued, “We knew we wanted to get married, I think, from the first week we started dating. Then John first touched on the subject of marriage. So we had eight years. This, you know, is not a hasty decision! ”
She added that her diagnosis was not really a factor for the marriage.
“He told me, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not making you an offer because of this diagnosis.’ It took me a year to create your ring. So just know that this time has nothing to do with it. But I want you to know that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It just makes it clearer to me that I want to do it and be together. But as soon as we realized we had this tiny window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to go for it. ”
She said the wedding was “small” but perfect.
“And I’ll tell you, we went into that bone marrow transplant department in Cloud Nine. We were so happy, so filled with love and positivity from this wonderful evening we spent. And I really think it moved us, ”she said.
On Sunday, Batiste received five Grammy Awards, including Best Music Video and Album of the Year.
