John Legend is “forever grateful” to Kanye West.

The 43-year-old singer released his debut album Get Lifted on Kanye’s GOOD Music label and will always appreciate what the rap star did for him.

Jon reflected, “I can’t imagine my career without Kanye’s influence. He gave me a platform because of his success as an artiste and producer.

“I don’t know if any of this would have happened if we hadn’t met and helped each other. I am eternally grateful to him.”

John, 45, and Kanye have been at loggerheads over politics in recent years.

And while the ‘All of Me’ hitmaker is keen to remain friends with Kanye, he admits their relationship is still on the brink.

He told The Sun newspaper: “We don’t agree on things but I never thought that was a reason for us not to be friends. Kanye was upset that I did not support him in the presidential election. He still hasn’t gotten over it.’

In recent years, John and his wife Chrissy Teigen have been outspoken on various social and political issues.

And the Grammy-winning star believes he has an obligation to make his voice heard.

He said, “As a black artist, I have always considered it my duty to stand up for our people.

“I want to achieve justice and equality in a country that has tried to deny us for so long.”

In contrast, John recently stated that some musicians are “afraid” to express their honest opinions.

The chart-topping star said: ‘Artists who feel like they can’t talk about what they believe in are probably more stressed than I am – they’re afraid they’ll lose their fans. I don’t feel that fear.

“I say what I’m passionate about and what I believe in, and that’s liberating. That’s who I want to be in the world.”
