Kimora Lee Simmons has come out in defense of her daughter Aoki Lee Simmons’ modeling career.

The TV fashion guru has spoken out in support of Aoki’s career after she was criticized for taking a job while studying at prestigious US Harvard University – insisting the teenager is not “less of a student” for pursues his passions outside the classroom.

When asked about the criticism leveled at the 19-year-old student, she told People.com: “This is absolute absurdity. We wish Aoki the best and she knows it. So whether it’s in front of the camera or behind the scenes… It doesn’t make you any more or less of a business person or more or less of a student or student of the world or anything more or less than a model. It’s important to explore all your passions.”

The 47-year-old TV star added: “I love that she’s trying to follow in my footsteps. But also I think it’s a pain because if I had what they have maybe I wouldn’t be a model .. But I think it’s just looking at different sides of the coin … When “I did it, and I know it’s hard, and I know it’s a little drastic. Why would you want to do that? But we love an educated, awkward queen. She’s an educated, awkward queen.”

Aoki, whose father is Kimari’s ex-husband Russell Simmons, also defended her modeling career after being questioned by her followers on social media.

One fan on TikTok asked: “You’re so articulate and obviously educated…how come you chose (yes) to model?” and Aoki replied, “Why am I going into a field that doesn’t necessarily require a degree or requires a lot of intelligence when I have a lot of education? One, because I love it. I think we should normalize that you like something. It’s not necessary to do that , in which you immediately get.”

She then added: “I would like to change the idea that you can’t be smart and beautiful, or you can’t be smart and enjoy your looks, or enjoy a creative/beauty/fashion based career. One that requires a lot of ingenuity. Second, you can be two people in one person. It’s me actually.”
