Klondike Stops Production of Choco Taco | Times Leader

Choco Taco, a poolside favorite for generations, will soon be gone after the owner and maker of Klondike Ice Cream decided to end the summertime treat.

“Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented surge in demand for our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure access to the full portfolio across the country,” a Klondike representative said in an email. “A necessary but unfortunate part of this process is that sometimes we have to discontinue products, even beloved products like the Choco Taco.”

Owned by Unilever, Klondike continues to sell cones, shakes and its signature Klondike bar nationwide.

The Choco Taco is a waffle cone shaped like a taco shell and filled with fudge ice cream, which is then dipped in chocolate and peanuts.

The Choco Taco can’t be found on many grocery store shelves, but it’s a staple at public pools and ice cream trucks. Taco Bell sold the treat years ago and recently brought it back for a limited time and in select locations.

News of Choco Taco’s demise caused some Twitter users to be confused and flash back to their childhood summers.

Others hoped to find a way to prevent Choco Taco from disappearing, including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

“Dear Unilever, I would like to purchase the rights to your Choco Taco and preserve it from the childhood of future generations,” Ohanian tweeted.

It remains to be seen whether the Choco Taco will become a distant memory, or if it will become a novelty, something akin to the McDonald’s McRib that still draws crowds when they’re casual.
