Matthew Rhys backs campaign to save pub in Wales | Celebrities

Matthew Rhys has backed a GoFundMe campaign to buy a pub in Wales.

The “Americans” actor is from the country and has strong links to the Pennal region, where locals are trying to buy The Glan Yr Afon Inn after it was put up for sale by its owners – with residents insisting the pub’s future should be protected by community ownership.

Matthew told The National Wales: “I have a strong personal connection to the Pennal area and believe this venture is vital in helping to safeguard the future of the community.

“It’s great to see people taking responsibility for their communities in these challenging times and I wish them well in their endeavours. If you can support, please do…”

Campaigners have set up a community group called Menter y Glan and hope to raise £450,000 to buy the pub and develop it – adding facilities such as a shop and cafe, as well as accommodation.

A message posted on the GoFundMe page explained: “(We aim to) protect this historic building and historic site and ensure the preservation of a legacy that has played an important role in the history of Wales for generations.

“Ensure Glan yr Afon build existing business (and continue to operate), renovate and adapt the property to create a multi-purpose community enterprise, including: refurbishing housing (up to 9 bedrooms) and creating a community cafe and shop in a disused outbuilding at the rear of the property. ..

“The local community has set up a social enterprise fund (‘Menter Y Glan’) with the aim of providing all the factors needed to make this venture a viable and exciting future. We can’t wait to do it with you! “
