Moderna asks FDA to accept updated boosters – NBC10 Philadelphia

Moderna said on Tuesday that it did – asked the Food and Drug Administration allow an updated version of the Covid booster shot to target highly contagious people Subvariant omicron BA.5.

The drugmaker’s FDA filing, which covers adults 18 and older, followed a similar request by Pfizer-BioNTech on Monday. Pfizer requires permission for anyone 12 years of age or older.

Like Pfizer’s updated booster, Moderna’s so-called bivalent vaccine is specifically designed to fight the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants as well as the original strain of the coronavirus in a single dose. The move is underway FDA recommendation in June to modify vaccines to target the two subvariants.

While cases of COVID-19 are on the decline overall, experts worry that the trend could be reversed due to two new sub-variants.
