Palisades cross country runner Thomas Smiga and Wilson field hockey player Melissa Shank are our Athlete of the Week winners for Week 4 of the 2022-23 season.

The defending PIAA Class 1A state champion set the course record at Wilson by more than a minute, winning the seven-team race in 14:28.

Scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Moravian Academy and all three goals in a 3-2 win against Palmerton.

Each week, The Morning Call sports staff will highlight three Lehigh Valley high school male and female athletes based on the previous week’s performance.

Voting begins on Monday and runs weekly from 5:00 PM ET on Mondays to 9:00 AM ET on Thursdays, with winners announced Thursday evening.

Athlete of the Week winners will receive a $500 scholarship awarded by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. In addition to the weekly scholarships, one male and one female Athlete of the Week winner will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship at the end of the academic year. See official rules.
