SAN FRANCISCO — The husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pleaded guilty Tuesday to driving under the influence in connection with a May crash in California wine country and was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation.
Paul Pelosi has already served two days in jail and received two more days of good conduct credit, Napa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Solgo said. Paul Pelosi will work eight hours in the court’s work schedule instead of the rest of the day, Solga said during Paul Pelosi’s sentencing, which he did not attend.
State law allows DUI defendants to appear through their own attorney unless the court orders otherwise.
As part of his probation, Paul Pelosi will also be required to attend a three-month drink-driving course and install an ignition interlock device, where the driver must give a breath sample before starting the engine. He will also have to pay about $5,000 in restitution to the victim for medical bills and lost wages and nearly $2,000 in fines, the judge said.
Paul Pelosi was arrested following the May 28 crash in Napa County, north of San Francisco, after a blood alcohol test showed his blood alcohol content was 0.082 percent, just over the legal limit.
Officers who responded to the crash just after 10 p.m. near the wine town of Yountville said they found Pelosi in the driver’s seat of a 2021 Porsche Carrera while the other driver was standing outside the sport utility vehicle, the complaint said.
California Highway Patrol officers reported that Pelosi was “unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred and he smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage.”
Pelosi offered officers her driver’s license, along with an “11-99 Foundation” card, when asked for identification, the complaint said. The 11-99 Foundation supports CHP employees and their families.
The prosecutor’s office opened a criminal case on the fact of bodily injuries to the 48-year-old driver of the SUV. They declined to identify the driver, saying the person had requested privacy.
The driver reported pain in his upper right arm, right shoulder and neck the day after the accident, in an interview with investigators from the district attorney’s office. He said he also had a headache.
After her arrest, Pelosi was released on $5,000 bail.
At the time, Speaker Pelosi was in Rhode Island to deliver a commencement address at Brown University. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
