PLAINS TWP. — Republicans are “united like never before” and “focused on the midterm elections” on Nov. 8, former Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday after attending a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser.
“I’ve got to tell you, having traveled to about 35 states over the last year, I think the Republican Party is more united than I’ve ever been in my life, and there are four reasons — Joe, Nancy, Kamala and Chuck,” Pence said, having on the minds of President Joe Biden, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“The truth is that this administration and its leadership in Congress have failed the American people,” Pence added.
Pence declined to talk about 2024 or whether he plans to run for president.
“I’ll keep you posted,” Pence told media gathered outside the Isabella Restaurant and Bar.
Pence clashed with former President Donald Trump after he refused to reject electoral votes for Biden during the January 6, 2021 election count, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.
Trump has indicated he may run for president again in 2024 and said it would be “very disloyal” if Pence or any other member of his cabinet decided to run against him in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
Meiser, R-9, Jackson Twp., said at least 70 people attended the private fundraiser at Isabella Restaurant and Bar. He is seeking a third term in Congress against Democrat Amanda Waldman.
“It was awesome,” Meiser said. “He offered to come over. He discussed world events. He discussed the importance of winning the House of Representatives. …We had business leaders, community leaders, ordinary friends asking him questions. He answered them so well. He is a statesman. He is a great American. He’s just a very impressive person.”
Jim Bognet, the Republican candidate for the 8th Congressional District, was also there. Bognet from Hazle Twp. and is trying to unseat U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic.
“If you think we need to go back to the economic policies of the Trump-Pence administration, where I was proud to work with Vice President Pence, if you think we deserve better for America, vote Republican on November 8. Vote for change,” Bognet said.
The 8th District includes the eastern parts of Luzerne County; all of Lackawanna, Wayne and Pike counties; and parts of Monroe County.
The 9th District includes the western portions of Luzerne County; all of Bradford, Columbia, Lebanon, Montour, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties; and parts of Berks and Lycoming counties.
