Phillies blow three leads, lose to Mets in final – The Morning Call

PHILADELPHIA — Mets reliever Nate Fisher pitched three scoreless innings in his major league debut after working in the Nebraska bullpen a year ago, Mark Canha hit two homers and drove in five runs, and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday 10-9.

Kanha’s second homer was a walk-off, two-run ninth inning. Brandon Nimmo hit a solo homer through two batters for the NL East leaders.

The Phillies couldn’t hold on to leads of 4-0, 7-4 and 8-7.

The Mets took three of four in the series to finish the regular season with a 14-5 mark against the Phillies. New York extended its lead over second-place Atlanta to four games.

Fisher allowed one hit while striking out one and walking two. The 26-year-old left-hander worked at First National Bank of Omaha in his hometown last year before resuming his professional baseball career.

Alec Bohm hit a pair of three-run homers and Gene Segura also had a deep hit for the Phillies, who have lost four of five. Philadelphia finished second in the wild card race in the Netherlands.

The Mets trailed 8-7 before Jeff McNeil led off the ninth with a double off David Robertson (3-1) and Canha hit his 10th home run. In the seventh, Canha tied the game at 7-all with a three-run shot off Connor Brogdon.

Nimmo gave the Mets a 10-8 lead with a home run by Tyler Cyr.

Edwin Diaz ended his scoreless streak in innings but got out of trouble in the ninth for his 28th save in 31 innings. Diaz, who hadn’t surrendered a streak since June 22 over 21 innings, allowed Nick Mattan to hit a sacrifice fly that pulled Philadelphia into the series.

Diaz struck out Darrick Hall looking with runners on first and second to end it.

The game was delayed 46 minutes due to rain that stopped play in the bottom of the sixth.

Segura, a pinch hitter for Matt Virling, led off the eighth by striking out Trevor May (2-0) to give Philadelphia an 8-7 lead.

In his major league debut, Mets starter Jose Buta allowed seven runs on nine hits over four innings. Bato filled in for Taijuan Walker, who left his Aug. 16 start with back spasms but is not expected to require a stint on the injured list.

The first five Philadelphia baserunners against Booth reached base, with the first of Bohm’s three-run homer doing the most damage in the Phillies’ four-run first inning.

Bohm set a career high with six RBIs in his second multi-homer game.
