IronPigs first man from the bottom of Darik Hall plus Clearwater pitchers Andrew Painter and Corey Phelan were named the best strikers of the Phyllis Minor League and second pitchers of the month in April respectively.
Hall, 26, cut 0.284 / .364 / .682 with eight doubles, nine home runs, 28 RBIs, 20 runs and 10 walks in 23 games behind Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The left-handed striker was first in the RBI, tied for first place in games, tied for second place in total base (60), finished third at Homers and finished 10th in the series among all junior leagues.
Hall, who has been named International League Player of the Week for the past two weeks, recorded three games with several homers in April. On Thursday, he finished first in the RBIs (31), tied first in additional base hits (19) and games (26), second in total base (69) and third in Homers (10) among all minor leagues. The Arizona native was Phyllis ’choice in the 14th round in 2016.
The IronPigs resume a six-game series in Syracuse against the Mets today at 6:35 p.m. at NBT Stadium.
The 19-year-old Painter knocked out 30 bouncers, allowing one unearned run for three April starts (12 IP) from low-level Clearwater Clearwater. In those three outings, he passed four strikes and three moves, releasing 0.58 WHIP.
On April 23 against Tampa, he knocked out 14 of 16 rebounds and conceded just one shot in five zero innings. The 6-foot-7 right-hander is leading the Florida League in strikeouts (36). Painter has an ERA of 0.00 and knocked out 36 of 59 rebounds, holding opponents with an average of .111 (6-54) in 16 innings (four starts). He has a strike-out ratio of 7.20 (36 SO, 5 BB) and an average of 20.25 strikeouts over 9.0 innings.
Painter was selected by Phyllis in the first round of last year’s draft.
The 19-year-old Phelan has not performed this season, but he is honored for his courage and perseverance as he undergoes treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which was diagnosed in April.
A native of Huntington, New York, he is being treated at a New York City hospital. In August 2020, signed by Phyllis as a draft, Phelan made his professional debut as part of the Florida Philis Complex League at the rookie level and posted a 0.93 ERA in five games.
