Pioneers repeat as champions of constituencies 1-2A, win the sixth title in 10 seasons – thereporteronline

COATSWILL – From an injured sprinter to a district champion throw.

Jonah Chavez’s trip was typical of his team.

“It’s weird. I’ve been working with these guys every day for the last three years, ”the senior doc said Saturday afternoon. “We had hard days, there were good days. But what kept us going is that we love each other. And we worked to the end.

“And though it’s the end, otherwise I wouldn’t have.”

The Pioneers combined their many efforts to win another district team title when Doc re-emerged as the 1-2A District Champions and captured his sixth trophy in 10 seasons.

It was a hot day at Coatesville High, but one that ended with the pioneers raising their heads – and the trophy – high in the air.

Chavez said of his district experience: “It’s hot, of course it’s hot. But in general, the weekend was unforgettable. “

It was a weekend when Brian Dykola of Hatboro-Horsham ran for gold in the 1600 and 3200 in Class 3A, and the guys from Central Bucks West celebrated the meeting with a gold medal in the 4 × 400 relay.

Chavez threw 161 feet, 3 inches to win Friday in the 2A javelin throw and help start the Doc title.

“I felt good when I walked in. I worked a lot all week, preparing for it. I knew all I needed to do was just do my job. And let everything fall where it can, ”he said.

Chavez was a winner in the sprint last year when the Pioneers won in Class 2A.

But in early spring, a new opportunity arose.

“He was an injured sprinter. And I threw him in a cast and said, “Jonah, listen.” I think you can score points for us, ”said coach Tim Eger, who led Doc through a decade of rule. “He has a living hand and he is hardworking. And the spear just started snapping for him. He’s probably our number one or second discus thrower. And our number one core pusher. Today he scored us big points. He had a monster weekend. “

Chavez was also fourth in the shot put (37-7.75) on Saturday, and on Friday Doc finished third, fourth and fifth in the discus, along with Sheldon Myers (101-10), David Michel (99-10) and Chavez (97). -0) accumulation of points.

“These guys worked very hard. We didn’t have many first places, but we knew that points would accumulate, and we had a heavy senior team, – said Eger. “They did a very good job for us.

“We scored some points in the throws, exceeded a couple of directions there. We asked a lot from our barriers and sprinters. And they did a very good job for us. The jump with the sixth helped a lot. “

Cole Smeland (12-0), Mika Mast (11-6) and Daniel Ringenberg (8-6) took one, second and third in the jumps with a sixth behind the Pioneers.

“The main thing was that we showed our depth,” Eger said. “You won’t go there and win every race. Sometimes you have to do it as a team job.

“At the beginning of the year, I wasn’t so sure. Because we had a lot of new faces. Most of them were seniors, so I relied on their guidance. I relied on their work ethic. And the guys came to us. “

Chavez, like his teammates who gathered around him on the backyard at the end of the meeting, enjoyed the trip.

“I just kept doing it,” he said. “There were great coaches around me. It just turned out the way I wanted. “

The senior said about when he first started throwing: “It was scary the couple’s first meeting. I thought I would kill someone with a spear. “

There were ups and downs, but it soon found its shape.

“It took progress, the days when you felt the worst,” Chavez said. “At some point I knew things would turn around. I believed that someday it would happen. “
