The man was fatally shot in Chester on Thursday afternoon, and police said they found him a few blocks from Wieder University.

Officers found a man who was not a student, with various gunshot wounds at the intersection of 14th and Potter streets around 1:30 p.m., Chester City Police Captain Matthew P. Goldschmidt said in an email to NBC10. However, he said the shooting itself took place in the 1,100th quarter of Hyatt Street, a few blocks away.

It was unclear how the man got to campus. After he was found, he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, Goldschmidt said.

A large police presence could be seen near the gate to the Delaware County School. Officers were also spotted walking through a nearby residential area with various testimonies.

“Chester Police are investigating a criminal incident that took place off our campus,” University spokeswoman Mary Allen said in an email. “Widener is asking the campus community to stay away from the area around 14 and Providence so Chester police can work.”
