(CBS LOCAL) – The European Union is preparing a plan to resume opening for vaccinated Americans, and many older people are ready to go. Travel consultants say older travelers are among the leading bookings.

Gail and Bob Grossman often travel. They are vacationing in places like Italy, Brazil and Ireland. But after the pandemic, international travel was impossible.

A year later, the elderly couple has been vaccinated and want to fly abroad again.

“As soon as Europe opens up, we will leave,” Gail said.

“We also go to Ireland every year, and Ireland can’t give us an answer if we can get there, and we also continue to postpone that trip,” Bob says.

This is what travel advisor Hillel Spinner is constantly seeing among her senior clients.

“Between February and March, I noticed an increase of about 110%. And the reason for this is that they have been vaccinated, they feel safe again to travel, the world is their oyster, they think where can I go now ? ” he says.

A recent survey by the American Society of Travel Advisors found that 44% of respondents believe that the ability to travel is the main reason why they get vaccinated. And two-thirds of respondents believe the vaccine will allow them to do so.

Jim Moses is the president and CEO of Road Scholar, a company that provides educational tours for seniors.

He says: “It was incredible. We have seen an increase in the number of people enrolling in the program by about 50%. They are very excited.”

Alice Kaufman is already 60 years old and she is planning a trip for her husband to Greece on the 60th anniversary. This is a much-needed vacation after the loss of a mother from COVID in August.

“Travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer, and that’s what my mother taught me,” she says.

Now after vaccination she can use the lesson.

This summer, the travel agency Embark Beyond is watching big bookings in Turkey and Greece.
