CHICAGO (AP) – A man opened an emergency exit from a United Airlines plane, took to the wing when the plane took off at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, and jumped onto the tarmac on Thursday, police said.

Chicago police said the passenger of flight 2478 was arrested and taken into custody. The 57-year-old Escandide, California, was accused of reckless behavior.

Police said the incident occurred around 4:31 a.m. as the plane approached exit to Terminal 1.

Police said that when the man jumped on the asphalt, he was trying to direct the plane to the gate.

United said members of its crew stopped a passenger near a plane that was taxiing to the airport gate to allow other passengers to exit.
