The man was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison after the death of his 3-month-old son

MUNDSWILE, VA (AP) – A West Virginia man has been sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison for the death of his 3-month-old son.

Daniel Messner was sentenced Monday in Marshall County, news agencies reported. In 2019, he was accused of killing a child by his parents as a result of child abuse.

The doctor told Marshall County Attorney Brian Gauss that the child suffered from a shocked child syndrome and that his death was the result of “extreme violence,” according to police reports.

In January, Messner asked Kennedy on charges of manslaughter, neglect of the child that led to his death, and malicious murder. Kennedy’s statement allows the defendant to accept punishment for the crime without having to plead guilty.
