The teenager pleaded guilty to manslaughter, received 2 to 4 years in prison

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 17-year-old will spend 2 to 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

On Thursday, Philip Payne pleaded guilty to one count of unintentional murder and one of firearms in the death of 18-year-old Dont McKenitt. In exchange for a guilty plea, the Allegheny District Attorney’s Office said it had agreed to a sentence of two to four years in a state penal colony.

Police said McKenitt was found shot in the chest at a house on Soles Street in McCisport in July 2021.

According to the criminal complaint, the witness told police that Payne unloaded the gun and handed it to someone in the house. Police said the witness told investigators that later Payne and McKenitt joked when Payne pulled out a gun, aimed a laser gun at McKenitt and then shot him.

Payne fled the scene but later surrendered, police said.

Take Action Mon Valley and the McKenith family rallied in Marchsaying that two or four years of Payne’s plea agreement was not a harsh enough sentence, citing race.
