How to use a passive approach to woodland management while actively monitoring forest problems will be explained in a webinar on Thursday, November 10, hosted by Friends of White’s Woods.
Tom Lautzenheiser, senior conservation ecologist at Mass Audubon (Mass.), will host a free webinar from 4 to 5 p.m.
According to Lautzenheiser, forest conservation faces many complex interactions, including invasive pests and pathogens, overharvesting of white-tailed deer and the effects of climate change.
Approaches to land management range from strictly barrier-free to full ecosystem design.
“Mass Audubon manages most of its forested acres through mostly passive management,” Lautzenheiser said.
“Through regular monitoring, active management can be targeted to achieve specific management objectives.”
Lautsenheiser is responsible for environmental management planning and project implementation at the organization’s 32 reserves in the region. Mass Audubon is the largest conservation organization in New England, serving as a leader and catalyst for conservation, acting directly to protect Massachusetts’ nature and stimulating individual and institutional action through conservation, education and advocacy.
To date, Friends of White’s Woods has hosted 18 webinars on topics related to White’s Woods. Recordings of all webinars are available at friendsofwhiteswoods.org/events.
