Tips on how to lower your utility bills this summer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – As temperatures rise, so can utility bills. However, there are ways to reduce costs during the summer months.
First, use the dishwasher. Although it uses electricity, it saves energy and water. Dry the dishes in the air to reduce the energy consumption of your dishwasher by up to 50 percent.
Next, discard the thermostat and use the fan. The fan uses ten percent of the energy made by the central air conditioner.
Switching to smart light bulbs can also help. LED bulbs consume 75 percent less energy than conventional lighting.
Be sure to use cold water while washing clothes. According to Consumer Reports, 90 percent of electricity when washed goes to heat water.
Finally, check your ducts. Holes, blockages and leaks can lose about 20 percent of HVAC efficiency.
