As the Philadelphia Phillies kick off their World Series game against the Houston Astros, musicians are customizing the team’s unofficial theme song for the occasion.
“Dancing On My Own,” a song by Swedish pop singer Robyn, covered by Calum Scott, came out of the player’s locker room at Citizens Bank Park and flowed through the streets of the city, all the way to the Kimmel Center, where the Philadelphia Orchestra did it their way.
In honor of their team, the musicians donned their best Phillies gear and played an orchestral arrangement of “Dancing On My Own” with the power of a full orchestra. It was recorded and published as an internet video.
“There are so many die-hard Phillies fans in the orchestra and in the management, we knew we wanted to do something to celebrate the Phillies,” said Jonathan Rothman. “We didn’t want to be the ones to screw it up either.”
The orchestra acknowledged that “Dancing” was the team’s signature song for the 2022 season, but waited until the Phillies won the National League Championship before asking Jim Gray, a Nashville composer and conductor who has worked with the orchestra in the past, to write an arrangement of the song. .
“Jim is a Braves fan and this has caused him a lot of personal pain,” Rothman said.
However, Gray moved quickly and with great enthusiasm, completing the orchestral arrangement of just the chorus in 36 hours. The orchestra rehearsed and recorded a 45-second snippet of the song for the first game.
