The 1975 “got carried away” in the studio and forgot that they needed to play their songs live.

The alternative band’s lead guitarist Adam Hahn admits they often come up with complex parts, such as the nine guitars playing at once on “I’m In Love With You” from their latest album Being Funny in a Foreign Langauge, and need to adjust it’s three guitars on stage.

He told Total Guitar magazine: “In the studio we never think, ‘Can we play this live?’

“It’s not something we’re looking at at all.

Sometimes we get carried away, and then at the end we realize, “Oh shit, this is crazy!”

In the mix, they did a great job of balancing it out, but at one point at the end of “I’m In Love With You” there are nine guitar parts going at once.

The balance is reasonable, so it doesn’t sound like it, but when you open the stems and think, ‘What are we going to play?’, you have to pick three pieces out of those nine to work on.”

Despite five consecutive UK number one albums, frontman Matty Healy recently insisted he doesn’t want The 1975 to be as big as Foo Fighters.

The “Part of the Band” singer admits the band has no commercial ambitions and would rather be a “small emo band” than one of the biggest in the world.

When asked if he wanted to top the charts, Matty said: “If I started worrying about it now, it would be a hell of a lot. I said this years ago, everyone wants us to be a big rock band and we want to be a small emo band. If we become Burial, I’ll be happier with that than f****** Foo Fighters, you know what I mean? I love the Foo Fighters, but I couldn’t do it. It’s funny, there’s something about me that’s very pop and what comes out is pop, but the references are never like that.’

The 33-year-old star, who recently revealed that the band decided to do their own tour instead of taking a huge payday to support global megastar Ed Sheeran, admitted that he and his bandmates are “not worried about the band getting older and continuing to put records”.

He said: “I was offered the wrong things for the right money. I never took [those offers], and it’s not that I’m proud of myself, but that part of me has been tested. I don’t really care about us getting old as a band and continuing to make records because we’re far from being commercially minded. What basically keeps us going, I don’t want to say, trust… We’re just four nerds who are obsessed with alternative music and pop culture, that’s all. I’m not worried about us being like, “Oh hell, we need to do a ***** remix with Marshmello.”

When the ‘Chocolate’ hitmakers won their first BRIT Award in 2017 for Best British Group, Matty found it hard to “really get it”.

He explained: “If I won the af****** BRIT right now, I’d be like, ‘Oh, oh!! you f****** [what]!’ But I was this feverish, dreamy, suspicious… I couldn’t understand it. We became this new thing and people started using crazy words like “Radiohead” and that’s where “Notes…” came from. I said, “Wow** this, I don’t know how to react, I don’t know what to do.”

The band’s ‘Somebody Else’ won the same prize at the ceremony in 2019, as well as winning UK Album of the Year for ‘A Brief Investigation into an Internet Relationship’.
