Gus CaƱizares made eight shutout saves and four different players scored for Hazleton Area as the Cougars beat Dallas 4-0 on Friday in Berwick to win the Wyoming Valley Division 1 soccer championship.

Gavin Huey’s first half goal was the winner. Angelo Paniaqua made it 2-0 before halftime, and the Cougars got second-half goals from Grant Russo and Radames Carder to wrap up the title.

Russo and Chris Cartwright each had assists. Goaltender Brandon Banks finished with four saves for the Highlanders.

The game was a rubber match between the top two teams in the division, with the home team winning both regular season meetings. Dallas won 3-2 on September 12th, followed by a 3-1 win over Hazleton Area on October 4th.

Both teams are now set for their district tournaments, which begin on Monday.

The Cougars will host Scranton in the District 2/4 Class 4A quarterfinals at 5 p.m. The Mountaineers are the top seed in Class 3A District 2 and will host the Wallen Halfpack at 6 p.m.

SUNY Brockport 6, King’s 1

The Monarchs set a new milestone but did not open the season on the road.

Sophomore Jack Cooper scored the lone goal for the Kings and leads the young program’s career scoring list with 14. Cooper’s tally pulled the Monarchs within 3-1 in the second period, but the host Golden Eagles quickly responded and pulled away.

King’s goaltender Ismael Ralsten made 25 saves on 27 shots in relief.

The Monarchs will take on rival Wilkes at 3:30pm on Sunday at the Toyota SportsPlex.
