Twitter’s new owner and CEO, billionaire Elon Musk, said Friday that he was not involved in the unbanning of Kanye West’s Twitter account. The rapper, who now goes by the name Ye, was blocked earlier this month for anti-Semitic remarks on the platform.
Tesla is the founder who officially took control The social media network tweeted earlier this week after its $44 billion acquisition on Friday that the company would form a “content moderation board with diverse perspectives.”
“No major decisions about content or account recovery will happen until this board meets,” Musk added.
One of the Twitter users responded to this statement Musk asked why the read-only restrictions have already been allegedly removed from West’s account. Musk responded that “West’s account was reinstated by Twitter prior to the acquisition. They did not consult me or inform me.’
West has not tweeted from the account since Oct. 8, and CBS News has not independently confirmed whether West’s access has indeed been restored.
Twitter blocked West from his account “for violating the policies of Twitter,” the platform told CBS News in a statement dated October 9. Although the reason has not been specified, West posted an anti-Semitic tweet on October 8 in which he threatened “death” [sic] con 3″ about Jews. The tweet has since been deleted.
When a Twitter account is classified as “read-only”, it means that the user is prohibited from tweeting, retweeting and liking content on the platform site says. The user can still read their timeline and send direct messages to their followers.
“The duration of this coercive action can be from 12 hours to 7 days, depending on the nature of the violation,” the website also states.
In connection with his statements, West was also restricted on Instagram after posting screenshots of an alleged conversation with rapper Sean “Dee” Combs, in which West suggested that Combs was being controlled by Jews. However, his Instagram account resumed posting on Wednesday.
Several stamps also broke off relations with himincluding Adidas, Balenciaga, Gap, Peloton and talent agency CAA.
