Brooklyn Nets condemn Kyrie Irving’s promotion of anti-Semitic film – NBC10 Philadelphia

The Brooklyn Nets released a statement Friday night condemning quarterback Kyrie Irving’s promotion of an anti-Semitic film.

Irving tweeted Amazon Prime Video link to Jews Are Black: Awake Black America on Thursday. He also shared a screenshot of the film’s Amazon page on his Instagram story.

The film was released in 2018 and is based on the 2015 book of the same name. According to Rolling Stonethe film and book are “filled with anti-Semitic tropes.”

“The Brooklyn Nets strongly condemn and do not tolerate the promotion of any form of hate,” the team said in a statement to various publications. “We believe that in these situations, our first action should be an open, honest dialogue. We thank those, including [Anti-Defamation League]who supported at this time.”

Nets owner Joe Tsai said on Twitter that he was “disappointed” in Irving.

“I am disappointed that Kyrie appears to be supporting a movie based on a book full of anti-Semitic misinformation,” Tsai said. “I want to sit down and make sure he understands that this is painful for all of us, and as a person of faith, it is wrong to promote hatred based on race, ethnicity or religion.”

“It’s more than basketball,” Tsai said added in a second tweet.

Irving posted on social media hours before the Nets lost Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. He has not yet publicly commented on the posts.

Brooklyn’s next game is Saturday night against the Indiana Pacers.
